The Academy of Fine Arts of Florence was founded in 1563 along with a small gallery where students could look at and sketch the samples of statues placed there. That small gallery later became a part of the Academy Gallery. The Academy of Fine Arts – Florence The Academy of fine arts after its creation was a two part art academy made up of the ‘Company’ for already working and experienced artists and the ’Academy’ for the emerging artistic personalities of Cosimo I de’ Medici’s court. It was initially placed in the cloisters of the convent ‘La Basilica della Santissima Annunziata’. Many of Florence’s best known artists were students in the city’s Academy of Fine Arts. Names such as Michelangelo Bonarrotti, Francesco da Sangallo, Benvenuto Cellini, Giorgio Vasari and Giambalogna were members of the Academy. Academy Gallery The actual gallery was founded officially in 1784 in the halls of the old hospital San Matteo in Florence, and it soon became a place where important artistic institutions and artwork could be brought together under one roof. Michelangelo’s David became a part of the collection in 1873. This was a real turning point for the museum’s prestige, when the authenticity of the pieces became the main focus and many of the plaster replicas were removed. Today the Academy Gallery is the destination of all kinds of travelers and art appreciators and is without doubt one of the most visited places in the city of Florence.
